Dr. Mahmoud Amani Tehrani, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Education, during the Research Day celebration, expressed his pleasure in being among the experts and researchers of Iran Language Institute. He discussed the importance of language from cultural, civilizational, and educational perspectives.
According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Department of Iran Language Institute, he stated, “The teaching of science is deeply connected to the teaching of language. A phenomenon remains unknown until it is named. Naming is a unique human trait, and research has yet to show that animals can name objects. This characteristic distinguishes humans. In the Quran, when the creation of humanity is mentioned, the first attribute highlighted is that God taught humans “the names” [al-asma’]. This is the foundation of a different kind of knowledge.”
Dr. Amani Tehrani elaborated on the constructivist view of language, which considers language as equivalent to thought. He explained that this concept has profound implications, as the entire process of formal and informal education is, in essence, a form of language learning. This deep process of language learning goes beyond vocabulary and grammar—it is about language as a medium for thought, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving.
He emphasized that societies located at linguistic crossroads have historically experienced significant growth, while those outside these intersections have had to make additional efforts to establish themselves. He noted that countries with a rich philosophical heritage have more to contribute to global linguistic discourse.
Dr. Amani Tehrani addressed the challenges in Iran’s language education system, stating, “We aim to break the current cycle of ineffective language education and introduce new models. With the help of Iran Language Institute, we can create opportunities for students to experience different approaches to language learning, such as using schools as language hubs during the summer. Achieving this during Dr. Zolfaghari’s tenure would mark a significant transformation.”
He praised Iran Language Institute as a prestigious organization with capable human resources, noting that its directors and instructors have always been among the most distinguished. This, he said, is why the institute enjoys widespread public support, which serves as a valuable asset for its initiatives.
Dr. Amani Tehrani concluded by emphasizing the need for a national language assessment system for secondary education, independent of university entrance exams, and expressed confidence in Iran Language Institute’s ability to lead this effort. He commended the institute for maintaining high standards and contributing to the nation’s educational landscape.
